The menus in the two dining rooms are identical and quite extensive with 11 starters and 15 entrees to choose from, including seven "classic" entrees offered every night. Most of the entrees we tried were excellent, though you'll still find the occasional over-sauced dish. Our favorite main dining room meals were a delicious cod dish the first night and surprisingly tasty potato beignets (potato and spinach blintz-like creations over an okra-based ratatouille). Specialty dining offers some of the best food on Norwegian Encore. There are a dozen excellent for-fee restaurants (Onda is not to be missed), plus 24-hour room service and a full-service Starbucks café. All but Teppanyaki are priced a la carte, so budget for this when planning your trip. Purchasing a specialty dining package is highly recommended, though not all restaurants are included in the meal plans. At dinner, the most forward buffet stations close, likely because a large percentage of Encore passengers choose to sample the specialty restaurants or sit-down venues for dinner.
The fettuccine with porcini mushrooms in a truffle sauce (served at lunch) is one of the best things we had all cruise. Although there are two or three selections for cruisers who don't eat meat, most options are meat- or fish-based. The name alone doesn't give away too much, which I suspect is part of the reason why it's been nearly empty every time I've eaten there — and that's a shame because it's one of my favorite restaurants at sea. I ordered a Cobb salad with tuna, and it was properly seared such that it was raw in the middle.
Sit-down specialty restaurants always require a reservation. You can book specialty dining online via the cruise line's website or app or by calling Norwegian reservations. You can also reserve when you get on board, but you risk that the more popular eateries will already be fully booked, especially during the peak summer and holiday periods.
